In her project “The Sun Shines Bright (Not as Bright as on Your Side)”, Susanne Keichel examines the microcosm of a school. In this institution, which should grant equal opportunities to all children, regardless of their background, social inequalities seem to become all the more apparent. Keichel combines still life, landscape, and portraits–closely observing mundane situations and daily procedures. Her protagonists, themselves in their puberty, are in a time and place of transition: between hope and insecurity, between new opportunities and predetermination; there is a certain tenderness in her images–they resemble what Jacques Rancière would call ‘pensive images’.
Susanne Keichel is a documentary photographer with a strong focus on portraits. In her series “Fluchtlinien” (since 2015), she has been documenting the so called ‘refugee crisis’ as a subject situated between an individual journey, political friction, and xenophobic violence.
During the festival Susanne Keichel will lead a workshop for students of the UJEP University in Ústí nad Labem, whose works will be shown in the exhibition at the Hranicar cultural centre.
