Karolina Wojtas series “Abzgram” is based on her own experience with the Polish educational system. Stifled by the conservative conventions of schooling in Poland, she has given a carte blanche to her playful inner child, resulting in an explosion of forms. Images of inexplicable collective rituals, empty classrooms, and learning tools alternate with visualisations of discipline and uniformity that seem familiar yet odd to us. Wojtas’ works reveal their absurdity as well as anxiety embodied in them. Given the degree of control exerted over schools by the PiS, with huge overhauls of the education system in 2017, Wojtas’ mission to break with these routines is more crucial than ever.
Karolina Wojtas is pushing the limits of what we consider photography. Presented in various media and with an interactive twist, each of her images and exhibitions is built upon experimentation, impulsiveness and chaos. Her playful approach broadens our perspectives on the everyday and alters our daily routines.
