Christina Werner’s installation “In the night they steal our past” combines several parts that deal with the dismantling of democracy in Hungary through the transformation and restructuring of public space and institutions in Budapest. The title refers to an article that reported on the overnight dismantling
of the Imre Nagy statue near the Parliament in Budapest in December 2018 a monument from the time of Miklos Horthy was rebuilt instead. Collaging photographs, paper webs and video clips, Werner creates a space with multiple and fragmented perspectives.
Christina Werner’s photographic work is characterised by a conscious and sensitive approach to representation and power politics, especially in the context of current migration movements and resurgent nationalism. In her spatial installations, she places her work in a dialogue with the exhibition space and creates a staging that reflects the theatrical nature of political events.
